The 2023 Kia Sportage Takes Over the Segment With Hybrid Tech

The 2023 Kia Sportage gets powerful and efficient hybrid technologies

Under the hood of the 2023 Kia Sportage, buyers will have a choice of three engines. It all starts with an all-gas 2.5-litre unit producing 187 horsepower. This one uses a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to channel the power to the wheels.

Next, the Sportage introduces a new HEV hybrid engine. It uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre Smartstream engine and a 44-kilowatt electric motor mated to a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion battery to output 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

There’s also a PHEV powertrain available. It uses a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine combined with a 66.9-kilowatt electric motor and a 13.8-kWh battery, to produce a whopping 261 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

This PHEV has a full electric range of 50 kilometres. When connected to a Level-2 (240V) charger, it only takes two hours to fully charge the battery.
